Music for the cinema with Filarmonica '900
In the past century there have been countless cases of music born in the theater and soon recognized as works of music altogether. The current season of the Filarmonica '900 of the Teatro Regio shows a particular attention to this kind of repertoire: Timothy Brock last November, during a screening of Charlie Chaplin's masterpiece, City Lights, directed the live performance of the original soundtrack the film, composed by Chaplin himself. Now another important addition to our exploration of the great film music: Jan Latham-Koenig, who is director of the Philharmonic 900 main host, it proposes a program with music for the cinema of Prokofiev and Rota.
The first will run the Suite op. 60 from the music for Lieutenant Kiže, whose film has unfortunately been lost, it was a feature on the imaginary figure of a lieutenant created by a group of Russian soldiers who wanted to give their unit a hero of reference. When the Tsar, intrigued by the companies of the lieutenant, asked to meet him, jokers to the soldiers that remained was to death. Prokofiev, in 1933, he composed the soundtrack, from which he drew a symphonic suite became famous because Sting will use one of the themes in his Russians.
Next to Prokofiev, the program offers another great Russian who has written extensively for film, Shostakovich, which will run the Second Suite for Jazz Orchestra. And together with Russia to Italy, with the soundtracks of some cinematic masterpieces as Amarcord by Federico Fellini, The sweet life and Eight and a half, all composed dall'indimenticabile Nino Rota. The great composer was also outside the cinema, as demonstrated by the melodic imagination of Ballad for Horn and Orchestra "Castel del Monte", written in 1974 and inspired by the castle erected by Frederick II in Apulia in 1240.
