Turin: before the city

Multimedia installation
History of the city - prehistory.
Andrea Ravizza, composer and conductor

Turin: before the city from ASALab (a VR&MMP Lab) on Vimeo.

"Turin: before the city" is a 3-min video that has been realized for a multi-vision exhibition, "Turin: history of a city" (museotorino.it/site/exhibitions/history/levels), a production made for the City of Turin and MUSEO TORINO (museotorino.it/site/museum), with the collaboration of...(see complete credits at the end of the video), to be displayed as a twelve-screen installation in a rectangular setting (the medieval court of Palazzo Madama in Turin).
It concerns the pre-historic eras before the existence of the city. The video is realized with a real-time approach, through the software MESH (edu.vrmmp.it/mesh), an open-source authoring tool, based on the rendering engine Ogre. MESH (Mise-en-scène Helper) is a tool for pre-visualization, video production and installation design. In the case of this video, we also have devised a novel pipeline by including a terrain generator in our workflow, namely World Machine 2.

Given the historical data provided by the Earth Science Department of the University of Turin, expressed as a height map, we have produced a 3D scene that included the appropriate color masks and hi-res textures; then, we elaborated the real-time graphic materials (in Maya) to be associated with the scene surfaces, and, finally, we imported the complete scene in the environment MESH for navigating the scene and capturing the video. In the case of this video, we also have devised a novel pipeline by including a terrain generator in our workflow, name World Machine 2.
