Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpretation
in collaboration with the Istituto dei Sordi di Torino
Introduced by: Elisabetta Malantrucco (Rai Radio Techeté)
Hosted by: Marco Basso music critic for “La Stampa”

It was 6 October 1924 when the voice of Ines Viviani Donarelli delivered the first radio announcement in Italian history via URI (Unione Radiofonica Italiana), the first broadcasting company in the country, which in 1928 became EIAR; in 1930 the Radiocorriere was broadcast from Turin, eventually leading to the present name RAI after the war.

Radio created a new language and a new way of communicating news, culture, music and entertainment, reaching a vast and diverse audience and offering a direct connection with reality—different from the printed press. It was through radio, for instance, that presenter Corrado Mantoni announced the end of World War II: “We interrupt our broadcasts to bring you extraordinary news: the German armed forces have surrendered to the Anglo-Americans. The war is over!”

Today, to say “radio” is to say “Turin”. For many years, radio programmes were broadcast from the Piedmontese capital. On the occasion of such an important anniversary, the Moncalieri Jazz Festival has decided to pay tribute to the early musical decades of radio, recalling the first orchestras—such as those led by Kramer, Luttazzi and Angelini—up to songs by the Quartetto Cetra.

The arrangements and orchestrations by Andrea Ravizza will be performed by the RAI National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Steven Mercurio. The orchestra will be joined by a jazz house band (Valerio Signetto and Marco Tardito on alto saxophones; Gianni Virone and Luca Biggio on tenor saxophones; Gianni Alberti on baritone saxophone; Fabio Gorlier on piano; Francesco Bertone on double bass; Luca Rigazio on drums). Featured guests include Voci di Corridoio (Roberta Bacciolo, Elena Bacciolo, Paolo Mosele, Fulvio Albertin), Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet and Ugo Viola on accordion. The evening will be introduced by Elisabetta Malantrucco (Rai Radio Techeté) and hosted by Marco Basso, journalist for “La Stampa”.

A special guest of international renown will take the stage: the great Italian singer Tosca.

This year we are proud to have a partnership with Rai Radio Techeté, which will follow the Festival throughout with interviews and exclusive content, and especially for this final concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of radio.

The evening also includes full on-stage interpretation of the performed pieces in Italian Sign Language (LIS) by Caterina Musio, as well as a screen with subtitles, so that the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community can fully share in the emotion conveyed by the music.
