Flavio Boltro (Turin, 1961) is one of the brightest figures in European jazz, a musician who has seamlessly blended technical virtuosity with a rare melodic sensibility. His trumpet, which has shined in Michel Petrucciani’s sextet and the Orchestre National de Jazz, finds in Andrea Ravizza's orchestral writing an ideal ground to explore new sonic architectures.
The Dizzy Gillespie Centenary with OSN Rai
A milestone in the collaboration between Flavio Boltro and Andrea Ravizza was the 2017 production at the Lingotto Auditorium in Turin. For the Dizzy Gillespie centenary, Ravizza curated the arrangements and conducted the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, bringing two trumpet giants to the stage: Flavio Boltro and Enrico Rava. On this occasion, Boltro’s volcanic sound acted as a rhythmic and melodic engine, integrating into a transparent and pulsating symphonic ecosystem.
"La musica dona emozioni": The Ferrara Project
The artistic bond was renewed in May 2023 at the Teatro Comunale in Ferrara with the production "Flavio Boltro's Trumpet and the Cherubini Wind Decet". Boltro's quartet dialogued with the wind decet of the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra, performing Ravizza’s arrangements that ranged from Italian opera to contemporary jazz. In this context, Boltro demonstrated extraordinary narrative ability, transforming the trumpet into a "vocal voice" capable of singing themes by Bruno Martino and Burt Bacharach.
The Performer as Pure Energy
In Ravizza's vision, Flavio Boltro embodies the essence of a soloist capable of "inhabiting" a written score with overwhelming energy. His participation in Ravizza's orchestral projects is never just a virtuosic contribution but a process of transformation that elevates symphonic rigor toward the freedom of authentic improvisation.
