Smooth, composed by Andrea Ravizza and premiered on 11 May 2023 at the Teatro Comunale di Ferrara, is a work dedicated to Flavio Boltro and commissioned by the Fondazione Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini, an orchestra founded by Claudio Abbado.

This work is the result of a deep passion for confronting and bringing together the worlds of orchestral music and jazz.

Inspiration and Fusion of Genres
Smooth aims to create a warm, colorful and constantly shifting sound world, integrating heterogeneous musical languages. The piece unfolds in an atmosphere that is “partly funk, partly jazz”, with brass interventions of an orchestral character—an approach that reflects the composer’s experience as a pianist, arranger and composer.

Instrumentation
The composition is written for solo trumpet, rhythm section and a brass ensemble (decet).

The piece is dedicated to the renowned trumpeter Flavio Boltro, who was also the soloist at the premiere. His powerful musical personality stands out against the solid foundation of the rhythm section, which at the first performance featured Fabio Giachino on piano, Stefano Senni on double bass and Enzo Zirilli on drums.

The brass section, described as “constantly shaded and varied”, envelops and supports both the soloist and the jazz trio, creating that distinctive halo of light that only an orchestral texture can provide.

Compositional Philosophy

In Smooth, as in other works, Ravizza seeks to integrate all elements and instruments, looking for “points of contact while respecting the inclinations of each”. This approach results in a multi-layered listening experience, where the brilliance of the soloist and the energy of the jazz trio merge with the broad and nuanced sonorities of the orchestra. The compositional process is guided by a balance between rules and instinct, with aesthetic sensitivity ultimately shaping the musical choices.
