On Sunday, November 15, 2009, the RAI "A. Toscanini" Auditorium in Turin hosted "Cine & Jazz," a high-value cultural event featured in the 12th Moncalieri Jazz Festival. The evening showcased a prestigious collaboration with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra (OSN Rai), alongside the Torino Film Festival and RadioRai.
The Program: Film Music in Jazz
Conducted by Maestro Giancarlo Gazzani, the orchestra performed with two internationally acclaimed soloists: trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso and saxophonist Francesco Cafiso. The rhythmic engine of the evening was provided by an elite section featuring Riccardo Zegna on piano, Loris Bertot on double bass, and Gianpaolo Petrini on drums. The arrangements, crafted entirely by Andrea Ravizza, transformed iconic cinematic themes into sophisticated jazz structures, including:
- Georgia on my mind (from Ray)
- Walkin' (from The Miles Davis Story)
- Medley Lover man - I'll Remember April (from Bird)
- As Time Goes By (from Casablanca)
- Summertime (from Porgy and Bess)
- Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (from Cinema Paradiso)
- 'Round midnight (from 'Round midnight)
A central highlight was the "Jazz in Movies" medley, an original composition by Andrea Ravizza that synthesized the project's aesthetic vision, bridging the gap between symphonic rigor, soloist flair, and a solid rhythmic foundation.
A Historical and Cultural Document
Hosted by Dario Salvatori, the concert also celebrated the release of the CD La Coppa del Jazz (Via Asiago 10 collection), featuring historical jazz sessions from the RAI studios between 1959 and 1960. "Cine & Jazz" confirmed the artistic reliability of the Moncalieri Jazz Festival and Ravizza's mastery in blending symphonic tradition with contemporary jazz improvisation.
