On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at the «Giuseppe Verdi» State Conservatory of Music in Turin (8:30 PM), the De Sono Music Association presents the chamber concert Danze rumene (Romanian Dances), featured within the Mondi Culture Musiche festival promoted by Sistema Musica to mark the 30th anniversary of the Intercultural Centre of the City of Turin.
from an idea by De Sono Artistic Director Andrea Malvano
The program outlines an analytical investigation into the art-music transformation of Eastern European oral traditions, focusing on the Transylvanian and Balkan regions. Systematically documented through Béla Bartók’s pioneering field recordings in the early 20th century, these folk sources provided modern European music with a radical substrate for modal and rhythmic renewal, transcending conventional equal temperament and regular metric frameworks.
Program and Performers
The concert juxtaposes historical and contemporary perspectives:
- George Enescu: Impressions d'enfance Op. 28, for violin and piano
- Béla Bartók: Rhapsody No. 1 Sz. 86, for violin and piano
- Béla Bartók: Contrasts Sz. 111, for violin, clarinet, and piano
- Andrea Ravizza: Rumanian Folk Songs, for violin, clarinet, and piano (World Premiere)
The works are performed by a chamber trio featuring Jingzhi Zhang (violin), Gloria Uberto (clarinet), and Elia Frittelli (piano).
World Premiere: Rumanian Folk Songs
Rumanian Folk Songs for violin, clarinet, and piano engages in a speculative reimagining of ethnomusicological sources, establishing a direct formal and timbral resonance with Bartók's Contrasts and Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs. The thematic material is drawn exclusively from the field transcriptions in Volume I of Bartók's Rumanian Folk Music (Instrumental Melodies).
Structured across five movements (Danza di Bihor, Lamento e Marcia: Il Pastore e la Sposa, Lo Scherzo Zoppicante: La Marcia del Cervo, Canto dell'Abete, and Finale), the composition translates microtonal nuances and the instrumental idioms of pastoral winds (fluier, cimpoi) into modern chamber textures. The architectural process maintains structural transparency: asymmetrical aksak meters in rapid 5/8, modal polarities, and polyphonic densities act as rigorous vectors where algorithmic calculation reconciles with tactile acoustic performance.
