The project dedicated to RAI's Historical TV Themes was born in 2014 from an intuition by Michele Dall’Ongaro, then Superintendent of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, for the 60th anniversary of Italian television. The core idea was to elevate small-screen functional themes to a sophisticated orchestral dimension, entrusting their reimagining to Andrea Ravizza.

From Collective Memory to Symphonic Fantasy

Ravizza's work went beyond simple transcription, involving the construction of extensive Medleys conceived as true symphonic fantasies. The themes, grouped by thematic areas — from historic broadcasts to great dramas, from variety shows to service jingles — were treated as characters in a dramatic narrative, capable of telling the story of Italian social evolution through sound.

Evolution of the Language

Originally structured for a full symphony orchestra and jazz piano (featuring soloist Danilo Rea), the project has adapted over time. In 2017, for the performance at the Paolina Chapel in the Quirinale, Ravizza expanded the score to seven medleys, tailoring the work for a chamber formation (OSN RAI Jazz Ensemble) and emphasizing its nature as a "sonic laboratory".

This journey demonstrates how applied music can claim its own architectural nobility and become a vehicle for shared historical memory.
